Victoria "Vicky" Zabicki, 89, of Richmondale, died Saturday at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Her beloved husband, Anthony (Tony) Zabicki on Oct. 7, 1967.
Born Oct. 9, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of the late Wladislaw and Mary Wolak Samborski. Before her retirement, she worked for Alvidsen Tools and Machines in California, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law Susan and Ira Tainowitz. After returning to Richmondale, to live out the rest of her life with her daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Nicky DeMorato, she settled into a life of being able to be on the go, in her own car until it became too difficult. Vicky always enjoyed getting out of the house with her daughter Barbara, whether it was for groceries and lunch or going to the casino's whenever she could. She loved playing penny poker with her family whenever they visited and was always the gracious winner. She loved traveling to meet up with her daughter Vicky Gerichten for a weekend getaway whenever she could or take an even longer journey back to California to be with her daughter Susan and son-in-law Ira which also gave her the opportunity to visit with her grandchildren. That was always a treat because they took her to their local casino's. She loved "action" movies that she always got to watch on a Sunday afternoon. She truly enjoyed reading, whether it was the daily and local newspapers or just sitting in the kitchen reading her many magazines and catalogs. Another enjoyment, that really gave her great pleasure later in life when she couldn't readily get out of the house, was ordering gifts for her family from those many catalogs. Every item, she bought, was carefully selected and thought out because it was especially selected for a loved one "who could use it". Her doll collection meant the world to her, that she started collecting many years ago, as did many of her other collectible items such as cat figurines. She enjoyed the comfort and companionship of her beloved cat, Kitty, who did more of the training than was being trained.
A loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, mother-in-law, sister and aunt. Beloved to all. A woman who showed her strength, hope and compassion in her life for her family. A Rosie the Riveter of her time. She raised 3 daughters on her own, which wasn't easy "back in the day". Vicky leaves a legacy of strong bonds with her daughters and family. Her body may be gone but her presence will always outweigh her absence.
She is survived by her daughter Barbara and husband Nicholas DeMorato, Richmondale PA, daughter Victoria Gerichten, Hinton WVA, daughter Susan and husband Ira, Lincoln CA, brother Edward Samborski and wife Joanne, Richmondale PA, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Rest in peace dear mother until our paths cross and we are together again but in the meantime catch up with your beloved Tony. Immeasurable love, your daughters Barbara, Vicky, Susan and family.
Funeral will be Wednesday at 9:30am from the Kevin M. Lesjack Funeral Home, 513 Main Street, Forest City, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Joseph's Church, Forest City. Interment Uniondale Cemetery. Viewing on Tuesday from 4-7pm.
