Richard Murnock Obituary

Richard A. Murnock, 81, of Sneads Ferry, NC (formerly of Forest City, PA), passed away on Saturday July 10, 2021 at Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, NC. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Richard is survived by his wife, formerly Kathern A Kerrigan, of Sneads Ferry, NC.

Richard was born April 20, 1940, in Vandling, PA. He was the son of the late Andrew and Alice Demasavitz Murnock. He was a graduate of Forest City Regional High School and American International College with a Baccalaureate Degree in Business Administration. He furthered his education in the military by completing Air Command and Staff College to acquire the rank of Colonel in the Air Force. Prior to retirement, Richard was Commander of the 88th Logistics and Operations Group at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He served as a colonel there in the USAF.

Richard had a private pilot’s license, a Pennsylvania Real Estate License and was active in community affairs. A past Commander of Beaver County Veterans of Foreign Wars Council, a committee member of the Joint Forces of Western Pennsylvania, lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW, Elks Club of Wilmington, Reserve Officers Association, Air Force Association, and 911th Tactical Airlift Group Deputy Commander of Maintenance. He was also a Senior Vice Commander Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6713. Richard was involved with Pittsburgh’s Annual Homeless Veteran’s Stand Down program that assisted veterans at risk of becoming homeless. Richard also provided training to Total Quality Management as a leader, instructor and facilitator. He also served his community as a past parish council member, lector, usher, and former board member of Grissom AFB and Wright Patterson AFB Aero Clubs, and served as den leader for Cub Scout Pack 612. After retiring from the Air Force, Richard enjoyed playing golf with his grandchildren in the Men’s League in Hampstead, NC at Topsail Greens, along with playing Texas Hold’em and Poker.

He is survived by his son Richard A. Murnock, Jr. and wife Doreen (Purlear, NC); along with his granddaughters Jennifer E. Schriber and husband Alex (Raleigh, NC), Sarah K. Mellon and husband Bryan (Jacksonville, NC) and his beautiful great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Richard is also preceded in death by brothers Robert A. Murnock and James A. Murnock.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10am in St. Joseph's Church, Forest City. Friends may call at 9:30 until mass time at the church. Arrangements are through the Kevin M. Lesjack Funeral Home, 513 Main St., Forest City. Interment with military honors in St. Anthony's Cemetery.
