Joseph Machek, 70, of Browndale died Monday morning at home. His wife is the former Ann Marie Ewonishon.
Born March 12, 1950 in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Zupancic Machek. He was a member of Ascension Parish. Joe graduated from Forest City Regional High School and the University of Scranton, with BS and Masters degrees. Prior to retirement he was a math teacher for 31 years at Forest City Regional High School, where he served various roles including golf coach, basketball coach and Athletic Director. He kept score at University of Scranton Basketball games and was a member of the Wayne County Sports Hall of Fame.
An avid golfer, Joe previously belonged to Elkview country club, played St. Andrew's Golf Course, and was the past secretary for Wivey's Golf League. He was a fan of sports, especially the NY Yankees and Giants. He also was a trivia buff and enjoyed watching Jeopardy. Joe was and dog lover, he was especially fond of his dog, Queenie.
Also surviving are two sons John Michael Wilcha and wife Lauren, Carbondale and Gregory Wilcha, Browndale; a brother Gerald J. Machek, VA; two granddaughters, Margot and Ivy; aunts, nephews and cousins, including a special nephew Keith Ewonishon; two sisters-in-law, Kathy Scotch Ewonishon and Alice Fino Ewonishon.
Also preceded in death by a brother in law, Andrew Ewonishon.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10:00am in St. Joseph's Church, Forest City. Interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be private at the Kevin M. Lesjack Funeral Home, 513 Main St., Forest City.
Masks are required and social distancing will be observed.
