Edward A. Calafut, 87, of Browndale, died Friday afternoon at Aseracare Hospice, Peckville. His wife Mary F. Calafut died March 12, 2008.
Born December 4, 1924, in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Frank and Catherine Novobliski Calafut. Ed was proud of his service to his country in the United States Marine Corps. during WWII in the Phillipines, on Saipan and Tinian. He also served during the Korean War.
Ed's career involved heavy construction specializing on bulldozer operations. He was responsible for many local landmarks including the first slope at Elk Mountain, Route 81, dams, coal reclamation areas, etc. He helped construct the 1964 Worlds Fair and other buildings in NYC.
Ed was always quick to lend a hand to help his neighbors. He loved working at his son's business, spending time with his granddaughter and family. He was loved and will be missed.
He is survived by a son Edward J. and wife Kathy Calafut, Vestal, NY, a daughter Kathryn and husband Bill Jones, Browndale, a brother John Calafut, two sisters Mary Savage, and Nellie Payne, a granddaughter Megan Jones, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be Tuesday at 11:45 am from the Kevin M. Lesjack Funeral Home, 513 Main Street, Forest City, with Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon in Sacred Heart Church, Forest City. Interment in St. Agnes Cemetery, Forest City. Viewing Tuesday from 9 - 11:45 am.
